Direct Animation 16mm Scratch Film Workshop
We will paint, draw, scratch, and etch directly onto 16mm film, and afterwards you will receive a digital scan! In this workshop, participants will paint, draw, scratch, and etch directly onto 16mm film. Using both archival footage and blank film stock, we will transform existing material and create new, dynamic works. This hands on approach to filmmaking, known as direct animation or cameraless cinema, involves manipulating the filmstrip itself rather than using a camera. Through techniques such as painting, scratching, and puncturing, we will produce abstract and experimental imagery. The session will begin with a short introduction to the history of this practice and its contemporary applications. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have created a short experimental film, which will later be digitized.

Experimental Film
In the five week Experimental Film Course course, we will work with a variety of media and techniques, such as animation, in-camera editing, patterns and reflections, 16mm scratch film, direct animation and projector art. The focus is on curiosity. Experimentation is paramount here: the story comes second. The course revolves around playing, wonder and learning to master new and old techniques. In each lesson, you will create your own film, building up a personal portfolio step by step. At the end of the course, you will receive all your video works in digital format.
